I’m opposed to the prison, but I’m even more opposed to those who impose their will by the sword. The greatest test of freedom is when someone speaks in favor of something you oppose, or vice versa. Do you let them speak or try to silence them? And if they are silenced, is the cause of freedom served?
I grew up around two men who could tell you what fun it was to live in Nazi Germany, where only one opinion was allowed.
Freedom of speech applies to all, including those who favor the prison. Booing them, shouting them down, threatening public officials does nothing to advance your cause.
The Transcript is right in asking if the PRC will give weight to it all after the recent public meeting. You don’t have to agree with those who favor the prison. But you should at least respect their right to expression.
