Sheriff to reopen substation that serves Stansbury

The Stansbury Park Tooele County Sheriff substation will reopen to the public as early as next Monday.

Tooele County Sheriff Paul Wimmer said finishing touches are being put on the substation in the basement of the Heritage West Credit Union at 200 Millpond. Final preparation, including furniture, carpet cleaning and installing technology, are wrapping up this week.

“We’re hoping to have a soft opening on Monday,” Wimmer said. “We’ll have a more formalized opening thereafter.”

While the sheriff’s office has always had access to the space below the credit union, it hasn’t opened the substation to the public in about four years, Wimmer said. Patrol deputies used the substation to file police reports or make phone calls while in the Stansbury Park area, he said.

Now an office clerk will be at the substation between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays to interact with the community. Services like fingerprinting, background checks and police reports will be available at the Stansbury Park substation, Wimmer said.

The move gives the sheriff’s office a more visible presence in the north end of the county, Wimmer said. One of the first things he did after taking office in January was move the sheriff’s office headquarters to empty space in the Tooele County Detention Facility.

Wimmer said there will be two desks for deputies and a desk for a sergeant in the Stansbury Park substation.

“Patrol will have the option of two offices to work out of,” he said.

With the main office at the jail and the substation at Stansbury Park, the offices will be more spread out than the previous arrangement with offices in the jail and Tooele County office building.

Wimmer said reopening the substation also provides better sheriff’s office access to Stansbury Park, Lake Point and Erda residents, who make up the bulk of the population covered by the agency.

The secretary working in the Stansbury Park substation will be relocated from the main office, Wimmer said. No additional staff will be hired as a result of the reopening, he said.

Prior to the opening, the sheriff’s office will install additional signage to direct residents to the substation in the downstairs of the credit union.
