No magic puddle

I observed several neighbors with sprinklers going full blast yesterday. It was the middle of the day with a good breeze coming from the north. This was obviously not the time to be watering fescue. The loss from evaporation alone made it look foolish, but the time of year made it look plain ignorant. I had to shake my head in disbelief.

Tooele County is in the midst of a severe drought. There are questions as to what will happen next with our water woes. Just because a great deal of water in Lake Point comes from wells does not make it indefinite. In fact, the aquifer supplying these wells is shared by all of us.

There is no magic puddle of endless water beneath our homes. This source is many years old and only holds so much. Once this precious resource is emptied it is gone. People have to realize that the water down there is limited; just because it is not from a reservoir does not mean it should not be controlled. This water is invaluable to life and if wasted creates a spiral of downgraded quality of the water itself, and the residents living around it. Think dust bowl.

We can all enjoy native plants and a small patch of green. Let us not pretend there is a need for a golf course in our front lawn nor forget all of the other things we need water for on a daily basis.
