A little over one year ago, the branch office of Intermountain Staffing in Tooele City had six workers placed in the community.

Today the staffing company has a workforce of 50 to 70 people working on weekdays.

In 2009, near the end of the recession, Intermountain Staffing reported that its Tooele office was only open on Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Today the office in the Clayton Towers building on the corner of Main and Vine Streets in Tooele City is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

“I’ve been out pounding the pavement, meeting new business owners and developing relationships with existing companies,” said Cathy Stromberg, branch manager for Intermountain Staffing’s Tooele office.

Intermountain Staffing specializes in providing a workforce for light industrial, entry-level trades, non-clinical hospital, and entry level clerical positions.

Client companies contact Intermountain Staffing when they are looking for temporary help, according to Stromberg.

She matches the company’s needs with employees in her workforce. The employees remain employees of Intermountain Staffing with Intermountain taking care of the payroll.

Intermountain Staffing also offers a medical benefit package to their employees, according to Stromberg.

She conducts screening, including interviews, background checks, drug testing, and other industry-specific training and tests before placing employees.

Some of Intermountain Staffing employees are retired or students who are looking for temporary work. Others are hoping that temporary work will lead to a full-time job.

Most jobs through Intermountain Staffing in Tooele pay between $8 to $11 an hour, Stromberg said.

“Temp-to-Hire” jobs give both the employer and the employee the opportunity to find out if they are a good match for each other, according to Stromberg.

Among the clients of Intermountain Staffing in Tooele are Tooele County, Detroit Diesel, Miller Motorsports Park, Ocean Start International, and Precision Building Systems.

With more job seekers than jobs, Stromberg reaches out to Intermountain Staffing office along the Wasatch Front to help match workers with work, she said.

“Reliable transportation is essential if you want to work outside of the county,” she said. “Public transportation is limited in Tooele County.”

But the job market in Tooele is growing, according to Stromberg.

“The job market is growing out here, but I still have a lot of employees placed outside the county that would like to work here,” she said. “However, our small businesses are struggling. They aren’t doing a lot of hiring.”

Based out of North Salt Lake, Intermountain Staffing has been in the staffing business for 46 years. Stromberg said she can trace the Tooele office back to 1999.

Intermountain has offices in six states with 18 locations in Utah.
