American Burgers got the go-ahead from Tooele City Wednesday to expand its dining area 10 feet.

The city planning commission unanimously approved a request to reduce the front setback for the restaurant from 30 feet to 20 feet.

Reducing the setback was the biggest hurdle in the business’ remodel plans. Now that it has been approved, the project can move forward, said Angelo Geovjian, one of the restaurant’s owners.

“We are happy they approved it,” he said.

Paul Nielsen, the project architect, said the next step in the process is to prepare drawings to submit to the city for building permit approval. He hopes to break ground for construction in the spring.

“They’re planning on phasing the construction so the business can stay open during construction,” he said, adding that the construction would be completed as fast as possible.

After the commission approved the setback reduction, commissioner chairman Chris Sloan publicly thanked the Geovjians for increasing their investment in the city.

“(It) is going to be good for all of us,” he said.
