The Toole girls took charge early and cruised to a victory, winning nine of the 11 events against East Tuesday afternoon.
The girls defeated East 175-105, while East’s boys downed Tooele 184-101.
Maddie Nichols and Brook Baker each had two individual first-place finishes. Kelly Clonts won the 100 freestyle and Cassidy Evans came home with a lifetime best in the 100 breaststroke. Tooele also won all three relays.
On the other side, East dominated the boys meet from start to finish. Tooele was able to win one event — Wylie Dalton in the 100 freestyle. Big events for East were the 200 IM and the 100 backstroke where they took the first four places.
“The freestylers are doing a good job for us, but we have a long way to go in the individual medley, butterfly, backstroke and breaststroke events,” said Tooele coach Mel Roberts. “Each week we find a lot of skills taht we need to improve on, and hopefully by the time the championship meets roll around in February we will be ready.”
The coach said that the newcomers to the team are improving and showing a lot of promise for the future. “We just have to be patient and keep encouraging them. The talent is there and just needs some time to develop,” he said.
Tooele’s schedule doesn’t get any easier in December. The Buffs travel to Davis, which is a strong 5A school, host Stansbury and Box Elder in dual meets before the year closes out with the Tooele Invitational.
“We willl keep moving the swimmers around to different events and realy combinations to ge them in their best events for the championships,” Roberts said.
Cassidy Evans was named Swimmer of the Meet for the girls. She finished first in the medley relay, 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke. She smashed through the 1-minute-20-second barrier in the breaststroke with a time of 1:17.93.
Dalton was named Swimmer of the Meet for the boys. He placed first in the 100 freestyle, and second in the 50 freestyle, 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay.
“Wylie has a lot of talent along with several areas he can improve in. I believe he will be one of the best freshmen to come through the program in February,” the coach said.
Others who came through with season or lifetime bests include Andrea Howsden and Hayley West in the 200 freestyle. Maddie Nichols shined in the 200 IM and Forrest Nichols in the 200 IM.
Maddie Eldredge scored a lifetime best in the 50 freestyle, as did Dalton in the 50 freestyle. Katelin Hardy excelled in the 100 freestyle with Dalton and Austin Pomikala posting top times in the 100 freestyle.
Andrea Howsden and Sydnie Hardy were strong in the 500 freestyle.
Peter Imlay scored his best time in the 500 freestyle. Cassidie Evans shined in the 100 breaststroke. Three swimmers recorded their top times in the 100 breaststroke including Jacob Leatham, Jake Nelson and Jason Roberts.
