SHS girls now 4-0 in region

The Stansbury girls made it a clean sweep through the first half of region play on Tuesday night with a 58-29 victory at Grantsville.

A three-quarter court trapping defense led to multiple steals and easy baskets for the visiting Stallions.

Three Stansbury players scored in double figures with Madie Alvey at 12, Shyan Adams 11 and Rachel Prescott 10. Stansbury also knocked down five 3-pointers with Adams at three, and Prescott and Alvey one each.

Stansbury has had little trouble with region opponents with the exception of Bear River who they defeated 47-45 at home.

Stansbury jumped out quickly to a 7-1 advantage with steals and baskets from Alvey, Prescott and Erika Lakin.

Grantsville sliced the lead to 7-4 on a basket and foul shot from freshman Abby Butler. Alvey responded with a 3-pointer from the right angle.

The onslaught continued when Adams drilled a 3-pointer from the corner to make it 13-4. The gap widened to 19-7 after the first quarter as Amber Spaulding connected with a shot at the buzzer.

Butler scored five points for Grantsville in the opening stanza while Bailey Critchlow and Jessy Davis added a foul shot each.

Grantsville managed only four points in the second quarter with foul shots from Butler and Whitney Castagno and a basket by Riley Ekins.

Stansbury countered with 12 points in the second quarter to give them a 31-11 lead at intermission.

Adams hit her second 3-pointer while Lakin connected on a pair of baskets during the run.

Grantsville outscored Stansbury 11-10 in the third quarter with solid foul shooting from Critchlow and Castagno. Butler also added another basket and Davis knocked down a 17-footer.

Bailey Wilson scored three points in the third for the Stallions, and when Prescott knocked down a 3-pointer, Stansbury led 39-21. A pair of foul shots from Alvey made it 41-22 at the end of three.

Stansbury dominated the final period with more of the same with steals and fastbreak buckets. Kallie Stewart scored nine points followed by Lakin six, Wilson five, Spaulding four and Flint one.

Butler scored nine for the Cowboys, and Castagno added five. Critchlow, Angel Cloward and Davis each scored four points, Ekins two and Kalli Hammond one.

Stansbury plays at Ben Lomond Thursday and hosts Tooele on Tuesday.

Grantsville has a bye on Thursday and hosts Ben Lomond on Tuesday, Feb. 4.
