In 1915 Woodrow Wilson was the president of the United States and he married Edith Galt in the White House. German U-boats sank the Lusitania, Ford produced the millionth automobile and an Italian earthquake killed 29,500 people. Albert Einstein espoused his theory of relativity and the first transcontinental telephone call was placed between New York and San Francisco. The Red Sox beat Philadelphia in the World Series, Jess Willard defeated Jack Johnson for the heavyweight boxing crown, Regret won the Kentucky Derby and Joseph F. Smith was the president of the LDS Church. A loaf of bread cost eight cents. A house was $4,187 and to mail a letter it was two cents. Among the birthdays that year were Ingrid Bergman, Frank Sinatra and Rachel Brown Smith. On July 16, 2014 Rachel passed away. Rachel was the daughter of Jasper D. and Ada Elizabeth Matthews Brown of Grantsville, Utah. She was the last of her siblings, Keith, Beth (Clayton) Peterson, Maurice, Jack and Quentin. She was also the last of her graduating class of 1933. She got her three-year degree from Utah State Agricultural College and went to teach in Duchesne, Utah, where she met Douglas Orron Smith and married him in the Salt Lake Temple on June 20, 1938. She obtained her bachelor’s degree and taught for 38 years in Duchesne, Heber, City, the Bridge Club, the 20-30 Club, the Ladies Auxiliary of the fire department and held many positions in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Heber. She took care of Doug for 25 years after an industrial accident left him partially paralyzed. When she retired, they moved to Grantsville, where she joined the Daughters of Utah Pioneers, the South Willow Irrigation Board and the beautification committee. She spearheaded the Welcome to Grantsville sign. She and Doug served a two-year name extraction mission for the LDS Church. She traveled to Italy, Brazil, Egypt, Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti, Hawaii, Canada and England, as well as many places in the U.S. She had a life-long love of learning and her garden blessed many neighbors. She is survived by her daughter, Sue Ann (Kraig) Christensen, five grandchildren, Nathan, Aaron, Lindsay, Alisa (Trevor) Haws, and Andrew. She has 13 great-grandchildren and one on the way. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 22, 2014, at 10 a.m. at the Gordon Creek LDS Ward (175 N. 1280 West). A viewing will be held on Monday, July 21, 2014, from 6-8 p.m. at Fausett Mortuary in Price, Utah, and also on Tuesday from 9-9:45 a.m. prior to the services at the church. Graveside services will be Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at the Grantsville City Cemetery (429 East Main). Family and friends may sign the guestbook and share memories of Rachel at www.fausettmortuary.com.
